Experienced Pipe Layer

Job Description

City Hill Excavating is looking for an experienced Pipe Layer to work with Project Managers, Forepersons, Operators, and other team members to lay out and install multiple types of piping and precast concrete structures while adhering to established processes and using safe work practices. Take pride in working alongside other respected construction laborers to provide top-quality services in both commercial and residential settings. Prior construction experience is required.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Install underground utilities including sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water lines
  • Lay pipe to grade using lasers, levels, and grade rods
  • Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and cut sheets
  • Set and install precast structures such as manholes, catch basins, and inlets
  • Prepare trenches including bedding, backfill, and compaction
  • Work closely with equipment operators to safely guide excavation and pipe placement
  • Ensure proper alignment, grade, and joint connections
  • Perform trench box setup and ensure trench safety compliance
  • Identify and work around existing utilities and site constraints
  • Maintain a clean and organized job site
  • Follow all OSHA, NY safety standards, and company policies
  • Assist with general labor duties as needed to support the crew

 

 

Skills:

 

  • Strong knowledge of underground utility installation methods and standards
  • Ability to shoot grade and work off laser systems
  • Proficient in reading plans and understanding elevations and slopes
  • Experience setting precast concrete structures accurately
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • High attention to detail and workmanship quality
  • Ability to work efficiently in fast-paced jobsite environments
  • Problem-solving skills when encountering field challenges
  • Solid understanding of jobsite safety practices
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and accountability

 

 

Requirements:

 

  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience as a pipe layer or in underground utility construction
  • Proven experience with sewer, water, and drainage systems
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Ability to work in trenches and confined spaces safely
  • Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb, bend, and work on uneven terrain
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to follow direction and work as part of a crew
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)
  • Valid driver’s license required (CDL is a plus)
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship
